The delayed shipment is due to missing paperwork. With everything going on, it had probably slipped Domenico’s mind.

Thankfully, Francesca and I manage to locate the correct documents on his computer for the process to continue.

Afterward, we assist supervisor Dante at the dock, checking off crates to ensure no further issues.

Once we’re all set, the men proceed to load the containers onto the ship.

I stall at the railing and admire the breathtaking sunset, a clash of flaming orange and yellow tones over the Mediterranean Sea.

“I’ll wrap up with the workers,” Francesca tells me before heading into the warehouse.

Domenico hasn’t called, and he’s not answering his phone. Perhaps it’s because he’s currently in the portatore di morte persona and doesn’t want to frighten me.

Sighing, I turn from the railing and start for the warehouse, only to pause as a car pulls up at the gates.

Who’s that?

The security grills the driver, and the man steps out.

My stomach coils into knots.

Repulsion pours over me.

After searching the bag in Alessandro’s hand, Marco, the commanding guard for the warehouse, walks over. “Signora, Alessandro Fattore says he has items for Nico.”

I suck my teeth. “Why didn’t he leave the so-called items at the house or give them to you?”

“He said he wanted to hand them to Nico directly, and Nico isn’t at the house. He wasn’t sure where to find him, so he came here. He wants to give them to you himself.”

I flick to Alessandro, waiting on the other side of the gates.

“Signora, should I let him in?” Marco asks. “Or turn him away?”

I release a long exhale and mutter, “Let him through. Don’t hesitate to shoot if he tries anything.”

Marco flutters his eyes a bit, seeming surprised.

I’m even astonished by my words.

“Sì.” He strides back to the gates and motions to the security guard.

Alessandro is the only one allowed inside after being thoroughly scanned for weapons.

Fear clenches my throat as I regard his features and tall frame. He looks so much like that asshole Luca—a menacing kind of attractive.

As a reflex, I step back when he stops before me.

“Ciao, Solari.” He reaches the bag to me. “For your husband. He said he might find a clue.”

“Why are you helping Domenico after what he did?” My tone is harsh, and I don’t care.

Alessandro smirks. “It benefits my mother as well. Don’t be so suspicious.”

With a shaky hand, I snatch the bag from his grip.

The intense way he stares at me is unnerving.

“Is there anything else?” I question.

He shoves his hands into his pockets. “Does it sicken you that much when you look at me? I noticed at the clinic, too.”

I lift my chin and attempt to appear tough. “Well, that bastard was your brother.”

“Only in features,” he remarks. “Luca was especially a brute to women because they were the only ones he had the strength to handle. He was too much of a coward to face men.”

“Oh, please. You’re probably just like him. You beat and rape women, too.”

Awkward throat-clearing resound from the guards. They shift in the spot.
